Plan the handover, not just the appointment

Define decision rights, reporting lines and transition priorities for an education leadership role.

TFI Editorial · Reviewed 11 October 2026 · China / international education

Agree decision rights

Document the responsibilities shared by the board, school leadership and academic teams. Discuss budget authority and escalation routes. Candidates need a clear picture of what they can decide and where agreement is required.

Prepare the transition

List the information a new leader needs: school priorities, curriculum plans, key relationships and upcoming deadlines. Share confidential material only through approved channels and with appropriate access.

Review a small set of priorities

Agree early review points and observable objectives. Avoid promising rapid school-wide change before the new leader has understood the institution. A useful handover gives the role continuity as well as room for judgment.

Practical editorial guidance, not a survey, market forecast or legal opinion. No private candidate data was used.
