A clearer brief for your next school hire

A practical checklist for agreeing responsibilities, evidence and the hiring process before a search begins.

Start with the work

Name the subject, age group and curriculum. Separate classroom hours from planning, pastoral care, activities and leadership duties. A job title alone rarely describes the work a candidate will be expected to do.

Decide what evidence matters

Distinguish essential qualifications from preferences. Agree how experience, teaching practice and references will be reviewed. Work eligibility should be checked against the role and applicable requirements, not assumed from nationality.

Make the offer understandable

Record salary currency, gross or net basis, contract length, housing, insurance, holidays and workload. Mark undecided terms openly. Agree who owns interviews, feedback and the final decision before setting a start date.

Practical editorial guidance, not a survey, market forecast or legal opinion. No private candidate data was used.
